Vaudreuil-Dorion Walmart reopening May 16, three months after suspected arson

The Vaudreuil-Dorion Walmart will reopen May 16 after a criminal fire forced its closure earlier this year.

The Feb. 20 blaze, which investigators believe was arson, caused significant damage to the store on de la Gare Boulevard. There were no injuries.

Walmart Canada tells CityNews that given the condition of the store and the extensive work required, the company took the opportunity to move up a planned renovation.

There will be new signage and an expanded grocery department, a spokesperson said in an email, calling the restoration a “big undertaking.”

“From the clean-up and restocking the shelves with new inventory, Walmart’s team continues to work countless hours to prepare the store for the reopening,” they wrote.

Last month, Quebec provincial police charged an 18-year-old man from Hudson in connection with the fire.

Police allege the same suspect was responsible for an arson attack at an under-construction home in Piedmont in December 2023 that resulted in one person being injured.
