80% of Quebecers support specific organ donation act: survey

As Quebec nears National Organ and Tissue Donation Week, a new survey suggests nearly 80 per cent of Quebecers are in favour of specific, comprehensive legislation on organ donation and transplantation.

The survey from Léger says on top of the legislation, Quebecers are also wanting to see more information, awareness, and promotion of organ donation within the province.

“These data show that the public is in favour of a legislative bill containing multiple concrete measures, above and beyond the issue of consent,” says Transplant Québec Executive Director Martine Bouchard.

The National Assembly is reportedly already looking at ways to facilitate organ donation.

Twelve recommendations relating to organization of donation, training of healthcare professionals, respect for last wishes, and consent that were suggested by Transplant Québec to the parliamentary committee on Jan. 31 are supported by the results of the survey.

“These data attest to the fact that the organ donation and transplantation process is highly complex, as they show that the public is in favour of a legislative bill containing multiple concrete measures, above and beyond the issue of consent. Drawing on its unique and highly specialized expertise, Transplant Québec has the know-how and the tools to deploy such a reform,” said Bouchard.

“Transplant Québec wishes to actively contribute to the work already undertaken by our elected officials. We must contribute, on behalf of all patients awaiting an organ transplant, and for all deceased donors and their families. We have a duty to do better because there is definitely room for improvement.”

National Organ and Tissue Donation Week runs Apr. 21 to 27.
