MONTREAL — A Montreal-area family now knows were the body of their loved one, who died while on vacation in Cuba last month, finally is – in Russia.

The wrong body was sent back to Canada last week after Laval resident Faraj Allah Jarjour had a heart attack March 22 near Varadero.

Miriam Jarjour says the body was now located in Russia and it seems it was even used in a funeral.

The casket that was sent to Montreal contained the body of an unknown Russian man – at least 20 years younger, who looked nothing like the 68-year-old Syrian immigrant.

The family also says they were reimbursed the $10,000 they paid to repatriate their father’s body – and received an apology from the Cuban government.

Global Affairs Canada had said that Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly spoke with her Cuban counterpart, who the department says apologized to the family and agreed to refund the money paid to a repatriation service.

The department had also said that consular officials were working with the Cuban government to find out what happened to Jarjour’s remains and to rectify the situation.
