Quebec invests $325K in CEGEP-elementary tutoring program

Quebec is investing nearly $325,000 in the “À deux pas de la réussite” Foundation for a tutoring program.
On Monday, Ministers Bernard Drainville (Education) and Pascale Déry (Higher Education) made the announcement.
The foundation aims to help children attending elementary school in Lanaudière, by offering them the opportunity to be paired with a tutor who is a CEGEP student.
Tutors carry out their activities as part of a college course.
The ministers described the initiative as “win-win.”
They say the money will be used to roll out the CEGEP-elementary school tutoring program across Quebec – to produce a tutoring program deployment guide, provide start-up support and create a web-based communication and matching platform.
The latter will enable any CEGEP to implement this tutoring model independently, in conjunction with an academic services center.
According to the government, some 15 CEGEPs have expressed an interest so far in implementing the program, notably in Montreal, the Eastern Townships, Quebec City and Abitibi.
Under the Plan de rattrapage scolaire – or school catch-up plan – announced in January, some 175,000 elementary and secondary students have benefited from tutoring services.
“Tutoring is an important measure that is producing concrete results in our schools for student success,” said Drainville in a press release.
“It’s an original way of helping elementary school students and giving great life experiences to CEGEP students,” he added.
“I’m very pleased to see several colleges across Quebec raising their hands to apply this innovative model, which promotes educational success,” said Déry.
Foundation president Alex Gagné welcomed the ministers’ announcement and the granting of funds.
“À deux pas de la réussite is a project carried out by young people for young people, and thanks to the funding announced today, new prospects are opening up beyond the Lanaudière region. We will indeed be able to extend the reach of our program and this vital support to help even more young people and accompany them on their path to success,” he said in a statement.
