3-year construction project on Ville-Marie, Viger tunnels begins Sunday

A major construction project on the Ville-Marie and Viger tunnels that’s expected to last three years is set to begin this weekend.

The work to secure the tunnels’ vaults will see workers dismantle certain steel support structures.

Work will begin Sunday and is scheduled to last until May 2027.

There will be a complete closure of Route 136, eastbound, between exit 2 (Atwater Avenue) and the entrance from Atateken Street, from Friday 11:59 p.m. to Monday 5 a.m.

The entrances to Route 136, eastbound, from de la Cathédrale Street and Robert-Bourrassa Blvd. will be closed starting Friday 11:59 p.m. until Monday 5 a.m.

Traffic will be diverted to Saint-Jacques and Saint-Antoine streets.

Additionally, Route 136 westbound, between Panet Street and the entrance from Lucien-L’Allier Street will be closed on Friday at 11 p.m. until Monday at 5 a.m.

Traffic will be diverted to Viger Avenue, Saint-Antoine Street and Saint-Jacques Street.

The access ramps will be closed 30 minutes before the complete closure of Route 136.

Drivers should be also be reminded that exit 3 (Montreal downtown / Rue Guy) of Route 136 eastbound will remain closed until the end of fall 2024.

Drivers can expect partial or complete closures of segments of the tunnels – in either direction – during evenings or at night, Quebec’s Transport Ministry warns. Certain entrance ramps will also be closed accordingly.

“Traffic obstructions are expected,” the ministry wrote in a news release. “As far as possible, they will be combined with those of other sites in the sector, in order to reduce their frequencies.”
