It’s “Teacher Recognition Day” at the English Montreal School Board (EMSB) where every year some of their many wonderful teachers are recognized for their accomplishments and dedication.
Being an educator isn’t as easy as A-B-C but CityNews brings you the 1-2-3 teachers who were awarded this year.
“Many times, (students) don’t want to move class because they have to go to the next level,” said Georgette Amar, teacher at Galileo Adult Education Centre. “They do not wish leave.”
“And I said, you have to fly,” she added. “That’s the idea.”
Just like her students — Amar, who teaches English and French as a second language, is embarking on her next chapter.
She is retiring from teaching after 35 years.
“It’s a hard decision because my heart is in the school,” said Amar. “Galileo is a small school with a big heart.”
The EMSB launched this ceremony over a decade ago.

This year’s event took place at Lester B. Pearson High School (LBPHS) in Montreal North.
“I just love being a part of it all,” said Paul Karpontinis, teacher for 19 years at LBPHS. “I’ve taught cousins, younger siblings, older siblings, families”
“I’m currently teaching the daughter of a former student of mine,” he added. “So just being part of the school’s tapestry.”
Karpontinis’ reach extends well beyond his economics and law classes.
He’s also the coordinator of the English Montreal Student Advisory Committee program, where two student leaders from each EMSB high school come together for monthly meetings.
Their recommendations, then brought to the EMSB’s Council of Commissioners and considered at their public meetings.
The word to describe each teacher awarded: humble!
“As soon as we walked in (to LBPHS) there was a lot of my students from the past,” said Karine Gomes Silva, one of the three award recipients. “They all came to talk to me afterwards, which is nice.”
“Which means they remember me,” she added. “I must have done something right.”
For the past 20 years, Silva has called Gerald McShane Elementary her home.
Filling the student’s physical education classes with positive energy, a sense of belonging, and hopes to associate movement with good health and fun.
“I think everybody deserves this recognition today,” said the physical education teacher. “I’m flattered to be here today, but I think we all deserve it.”
“I do appreciate everyone coming to celebrate the three of us,” said Karpontinis.
“For me, it’s very rewarding,” added Amar. “Thank you.”
