Quebec singer-songwriter Jean-Pierre Ferland will be laid to rest in a national funeral June 1 at Montreal’s Mary Queen of the World Cathedral.

Quebec Premier François Legault offered the national funeral to the Ferland family after his April 27 death at 89 years old.

He will lie in repose May 31 at the Théâtre Maisonneuve in Place des Arts. Ferland was the first Quebec artist to perform there.

Quebecers will also be able to bid him farewell via an online registry of condolences.

Ferland becomes the 15th Quebec public figure to receive a national funeral.

Born in Montreal on June 24, 1934, the man who left his mark on Quebec with the song “Une chance qu’on s’a” died of natural causes.

The prolific singer-songwriter’s discography includes around 30 albums, including “Jaune,” his 1970 masterpiece. Some 60,000 copies were sold in just one year.
