Montreal Alouettes players receive Grey Cup championship rings

By News Staff

Last year’s Grey Cup-winning Montreal Alouettes received their championship rings Friday – a piece of jewelry recognizing the team’s Cinderella story and unlikely triumph.

Players, executives, staff and cheerleaders were gifted the ring – a blue sapphire surrounded by red stones in the shape of the team’s logo, and 254 white diamonds.

The Alouettes capped off an improbable playoff run by coming from behind to defeat the favoured Winnipeg Blue Bombers 28-24 in the Grey Cup game on Nov. 19, 2023, in Hamilton.

This ring serves “as a reminder of what a tightly-knit team can achieve,” said Mark Weightman, president and CEO of the Alouettes, in a news release.

Some of the symbolism included on the ring: different colours (red, blue, green) to represent the Canadian, American, and international players on the team; the Alouettes’ motto “1% FYJW”; Montreal skyline; reference to Montreal’s eight Grey Cups; and a fleur-de-lys pattern.
