New modular ER at Lakeshore General Hospital in Pointe-Claire

By News Staff

Lakeshore General Hospital in Pointe-Claire will open a temporary emergency room, amid major renovations.

Quebec Health Minister Christian Dubé said in a press release on Tuesday morning that modernizing health establishments is a priority in his “Health Plan.”

“Although the new emergency room project at the Lakeshore General Hospital will be completed in the coming years, the modular building will, in the meantime, allow care and services to be offered in a safe, modern and more adapted environment,” explained Dubé.

The new ER will be located on the first floor of the modular building, with a total area of more than 3,140 m².

It’s set to open on Wednesday.

In addition to the emergency room on the ground floor, the building will house the Groupe de médecine de famille universitaire (GMF-U), a joint project with McGill University.

The modular building will remain in place for a few years to facilitate the expansion of the hospital.

According to a press release, “the temporary premises will house a modern emergency room adapted to the needs of patients and staff, while the hospital expansion work is completed.”

The future GMF-U will welcome and care for users who come to the ER for non-urgent situations.

In addition, the modular building will house the Rapid Access Clinic (CAR) on the second floor, which will help increase fluidity within the hospital.

The GMF-U and the CAR will welcome patients starting May 29.

Construction for the new hospital expansion is planned to start in 2025.

The emergency room occupancy rate was at 100 per cent on Tuesday at 12:30 p.m. for the Lakeshore.

Montreal West Island CIUSSS says on its website that the new permanent ER will be a three-storey building that includes 38 stretchers in cubicles, a 12-bed, short-term hospitalization unit for physical health, as well as a six-bed, short-term mental health unit.

“Quebecers in the region, as well as our staff, deserve to benefit from facilities that meet their needs,” said Dubé.
