“Do expect that it’ll take longer than usual," says Louis-André Bertrand, spokesperson of Quebec's Transport Ministry, ahead of major road closures over the long weekend including part of Highway 40 west. Alyssia Rubertucci reports.

Drivers should prepare for traffic as there will be many road closures this long weekend.

Highway 40 west will see a major closure.

The closure is required for the paving work to be completed.

There will be a complete closure on Highway 40 (Métropolitaine) westbound, between exit 70, A-15 North, Route 117, Laval, Rockland and Marcel Laurin Blvd. (if you look at the map, the direction heading towards those exits is closed)

The entrance to Cavendish Blvd. will also be closed.

“There’s around 200,000 vehicles that go on on that stretch of the 40 daily, so it’s going to be a massive source of traffic and congestion, so you want to make sure you don’t go in that area,” says Louis-André Bertrand, spokesperson of Quebec’s Transport Ministry.

“It’s to be expected. At this point, like it’s becoming the new normal,” says one Montreal driver. “I was thinking of going around places, but Montreal in the summertime is an absolute disaster to drive in.”

“I was supposed to go somewhere on Sunday and I would have taken the 40 west and now I have to change my plans,” said one Montrealer.

Montrealers are encouraged to take alternate routes.

“If you’re traveling between west, you’re going to want to take the 20, the 440 and the 13, there’s going to be good options for the next few days,” Bertrand said, while encouraging drivers to check Quebec 511.

He also suggests that those heading to Montreal Trudeau Airport are encouraged to take Highway 20 or public transit.

“Do expect that it’ll take longer than usual to do your commute. Stay informed just to know if the 440 is still closed when you’re going to use it. And just to be patient and courteous,” he said.
