Authorities located the vehicle that plunged into the waters of the Rivière des Prairies between Montreal and Laval Sunday morning, but police and first responders combed the banks and water searching for the occupant.
Montreal police said nobody had been found in either the vehicle or the surrounding waters as of Sunday evening.
Police received a 911 call around 4:50 a.m. about a vehicle that drove off the end of St-Hubert Street across a narrow park in the city’s Ahuntsic neighbourhood.
“The vehicle is completely submerged,” SPVM spokesperson Véronique Dubuc said. “According to witnesses, a man was observed in the water near the vehicle in question.
The vehicle was later found, towed out and sent for analysis.
Montreal police spokesperson Jean-Pierre Brabant said there was no suggestion that anyone else was missing but the investigation continues.
Members of the Tactical Intervention Group (GTI) and divers from the SPVM were called to the scene. Teams from the Service de sécurité incendie de Montréal (SIM) and the Canadian Coast Guard were also called in for reinforcements.
“The causes surrounding this event remain to be determined,” said Dubuc.
