A construction worker died Wednesday morning after an accident at a condo site in downtown Montreal.

The incident happened at around 11:15 a.m., at a construction site located at Square-Phillips and Cathcart streets.

The worker, a subcontractor for Magil Construction, is said to have been in his 20s and was operating machinery from ground level near a crane.

Material from that crane reportedly fell and hit the victim.

He died immediately at the scene.

In an email statement to CityNews, Magil Construction, who manages the site, said it was working with Commission des normes, de l’équité, de la santé et de la sécurité du travail (CNESST) investigators to “determine the causes” of this accident.

“The site has been evacuated, and we remind all our workers that psychological support is available to them,” the company also said. “Most importantly, we wish to extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the deceased employee.”

CNESST said in an email that inspectors are on site and are “interviewing witnesses and are interested in the work methods used, the equipment, the supervision of workers as well as their training and work experience.”
