National Indigenous Peoples Day, multiple events in Montreal

Citizens are invited to take part in several events honouring National Indigenous Peoples Day and to celebrate alongside the First Nations, Inuit, and Metis peoples on Friday.

Native Montreal, the Southern Quebec Inuit Association (SQIA), The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, POP Montreal, and the Tasiutigiit Association are hosting several activities.

Montreal Fine Arts Museum 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Montreal Museum of fine arts will provide free admission for their collections and exhibitions, apart from their major exhibition (Saints, Sinners, Lovers, and Fools: Three Hundred Years of Flemish Masterworks).

They encourage the public to come and celebrate Indigenous cultures and histories at the museum.

No reservations are required.

Parc Arthur-Therrien in Verdun – 1 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Native Montreal, the Southern Quebec Inuit Association (SQIA) and the Tasiutigiit Association will offer numerous planned activities.

Some of the events include:

•Kokum Cook-off Contest (1 p.m. to 3 p.m.)

•Spin Games: Tic Tac Dunk, Zonoasis, Cerebral, Bean Ball, Volleypong, Jumbotowa, Vertigo

•Inuit Games with SQIA

•Reading tent with Tasiutigiit

•Messy Kitchen Catering Kiosk

•Artisan Vendors

•Various activities organized by the Native Montreal team

There will also be six scheduled performances that will take place as of 3 p.m.

Scheduled Performances:

•3 p.m. : Opening with the Pow Wow Rangers

•3:30 p.m. : Angela Amarualik

•4:30 p.m. : Tupiq A.C.T.

•5 p.m. : Backwater Township

•6 p.m. : Micmac Drive

•7 p.m. : Nina & Sierra Segalowitz

Cabot Square 3 p.m.

POP Montreal has partnered with Resilience Montreal and the Native Women’s Shelter to host a free concert.

The featured artists include two-time Juno winner Aysanabee, the Beatrice Deer Band, Sinquah Family Hoop Dancers, and more.

Attendees will have the opportunity to participate in a free Inuit soapstone carving workshop.

Additionally, the event will be featured on a special live tv broadcast by APTN and NITV/Uvagut TV.

In the event of rain, the concert will be relocated to St. Jax church.

Outremont 5:30 p.m.

Outremont will host a special performance for its “Juin en Musique à Outremont” series with scheduled performances by Indigenous artist Akawui and Tee Cloud.

There will also be planned activities that start at 5:30 p.m., while the music performances will begin at 7 p.m.
