Crime doubled on Montreal metro from 2022 to 2023: SPVM report

Crimes committed in the Montreal metro system are on the rise, according to new data released by Montreal police (SPVM).

Within the past six months, 30,000 calls have been made to STM special constables to intervene in situations.

According to the report, there were 662 assaults, 100 robberies, 57 sexual assaults and one attempted murder that occurred in the metro, for a total of 820 crimes committed against a person in 2023.

This represents an 80 per cent increase, compared to 455 similar crimes committed in 2022.

In 2021, the SPVM said there were 360 crimes committed against a person.

Data from the Fraternité des constables et des agents de la paix STM-CSN noted that 47,000 calls were made to the special constables in 2023.

Fifteen special constables were hired in December, totaling 165 hired by the STM, with a new cohort currently in training.

As for the safety ambassadors, whose job is to detect dangerous situations, there are currently 14 active ambassadors with 12 more set to begin the two-week training at the beginning of July.

In total, there will be 26 safety ambassador working in the STM metro system.
