14th edition of Montreal Comiccon kicks off

“It’s excellent,” said Mike Smith, who portrays Bubbles in the Trailer Park Boys, about the 14th edition of Montreal Comiccon. The pop culture convention is taking place until July 7 at Palais des congres.

The 14th edition of Montreal Comiccon is taking place this weekend at Palais des congrès.

Originally launched in 2009, the convention is quickly growing in popularity. Last year, 60,000 people attended the convention over the three-day weekend.

The multi-genre, pop culture convention showcases the entertainment universe, with everything from comic books, to sci-fi, horror, anime, toys, movies, and video games.

“Come on down to Comiccon, it’s fun,” said actress Melinda Clarke, who will be present at Comiccon. Clarke is best known for her role in “Days of Our Lives” and “The O.C.”

The programming for the three-day event will be diverse, with three floors waiting to be discovered. This includes an exhibit room, an artist alley, corporate and interactive booths, and fun activities for all ages.

Convention goers even have the opportunity to get a glimpse of celebrities on stage and attend panels. They can get up close and personal with their favourite guest and purchase autographs and photo opportunities.

Actress Heather Langenkamp from “A Nightmare on Elm Street” says she enjoys meeting her fans. This year, Comiccon is honouring the 40th anniversary of the franchise.

“When I meet my young fans, I get transported back to being a teenager again. I always feel so grateful to them to remind me what an amazing character Nancy Thompson was and how much she changed so many people’s lives,” Langenkamp said.

Voice actors and comic book creators will also be present.

Film screenings, a costume contest, workshops, and a masquerade, are some of the many attractions part of this weekend’s convention.

CityNews even got a chance to speak to the Trailer Park Boys themselves on Friday.

“Love being in Montreal, one of my favorite cities in Canada, and it’s excellent because at Comiccon, the fans get to come right up to the table and we talk to them and stuff,” said Mike Smith, who portrays Bubbles in the television series.

“We’re here at Comiccon all weekend. Come on down.”
