Once on the scene, police found the 64-year-old woman unresponsive. She was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.

“The investigation is still ongoing now. It’s just a couple of hours ago that it started. So for now we do not tell any details about that but we can confirm it’s a murder,” said SPVM spokesperson Sabrina Gauthier.

“We’re still trying to know if this happened maybe a couple of hours or maybe a couple of days ago.”

People living in the same apartment building as the 64-year-old woman said they did not know much about the victim.

“She never interacted with anyone and I think maybe there were some incidents that made her really like suspicious because she wouldn’t let anyone in the apartment including the concierge,” said Veronika Dzyadok.

“In this apartment I don’t know who lived there. There were many people who arrived every time. Every time there were many strange persons who came in the apartment,” said Salem Sebei.

It is the city’s 21st homicide and the fourth woman murdered on the Montreal territory this year.

“She may not have that access to support to get help,” said Linda Basque, a coordinator for Info-Femmes, a women’s advocacy organization, adding, “all these are factors which is why we call them feminicides and that this woman was killed, was found in this way, was the gruesome aspect of this is linked to the fact that she is a woman.”

Investigators from the SPVM’s Major Crimes Unit were dispatched to the scene.

An investigation has been opened to try to clarify the circumstances surrounding the death.

No arrests have been made so far and police say there is no suspect at the moment.

“We’re still trying to know if there are some witnesses. There’s somebody (that) heard something, saw something or something like that. So they can call 911,” added Gauthier.
