Hotel strike planned next week in Montreal, Quebec, Sherbrooke

By The Canadian Press

Hotels in Montreal, Quebec City and Sherbrooke will be affected by a “national hotel strike” on Aug. 8.

The Confédération des syndicats nationaux (CSN) stated on Thursday that the strike was necessary due to the “lack of progress at the bargaining table about the common demands from coordinated bargaining.”

The CSN said that thousands of hotel workers will be on strike for 24 hours.

This strike day is part of the 11th round of coordinated bargaining for the CSN hotel industry.

A total of 30 hotels representing 3,500 employees are taking part in the negotiations. Around 15 of the 30 hotels have voted in favour of a 120-hour strike mandate, which they can call at any time.

The workers are making seven main demands as part of the negotiations, including a 36 per cent pay rise over four years.

They also want their employers to increase their contribution to the group insurance plan and to stop using employment agencies, among other things.

Last Sunday, around 1,000 workers at three well-known Montreal hotels – The Queen Elizabeth, Château Champlain, and Bonaventure – went on a surprise 24-hour strike.

Hundreds of hotel workers demonstrated outside the Marriott Château Champlain on Monday.
