A 26-year-old suspect has been charged with attempted murder and multiple charges for his alleged involvement in a violent shooting in Dollard-des-Ormeaux on Montreal’s West Island Sunday night.

Nickael Hickey from St-Laurent appeared at the Montreal courthouse on Wednesday morning to face around 15 charges including attempted murder targeting Montreal police officers.

According to Quebec’s police watchdog, the Bureau des enquêtes indépendantes (BEI), Montreal police received a 911 call around 8 p.m. Sunday about an argument that broke out with potential gunshots heard on the corner of Salaberry Blvd. and Davignon Street in DDO.

The suspect left the residence and allegedly pointed a firearm at a motorist in their vehicle, prompting them to drive away from the scene.

He then allegedly tried to steal another vehicle from a 54-year-old man and his 18-year-old son.

When police arrived on scene, there was an intense exchange of gunfire between the suspect and police. According to witnesses, between 30 to 40 shots were fired.

The bystanders were struck by the bullets. The 54-year-old was seriously injured, but is in stable condition. The 18-year-old is recovering at home.

Hickey was also shot and is in hospital.

He appeared in court on Tuesday and Wednesday via videoconference and his condition is reportedly making the next steps of the case more complex since he is injured.

Hickey will remain detained until Friday ahead of his next court appearance. It’s not yet known if Hickey will face charges of attempted murder of the two victims.

According to Le Journal, Hickey was released on bail two weeks ago for crimes related breaking and entering.

Hickey was also charged with violating a court order after possessing a weapon and breaking his bail conditions he agreed to follow on July 24.

The BEI is investigating the DDO shooting, alongside the Sûreté du Québec (SQ).
