Canada Post to offer more services in English in Quebec

Canada Post will soon offer more services in English in Quebec, according to a consultation on bilingualism in post offices across the country.

The federal Crown corporation says it is “legally required” – every 10 years – to assess the state of bilingual services in its network of post offices under the Official Languages Act.

“As part of this exercise, the Official Languages Regulations determined that some of Canada Post’s unilingual post offices must become bilingual,” a spokesperson for Canada Post said. “In identified areas, all postal services will need to be offered in both official languages.

“In other communities, to fulfil the OLRRE requirements, additional post offices will need to become bilingual.”

Canada Post says it promoted its digital survey by distributing of 4.4 million postcards to affected households, through local newspapers, online channels and social media. The survey was open from July 29 to Aug. 16.

“We consulted with Canadians to get their opinion to evaluate existing and future access to bilingual services,” the spokesperson said.

The organization is reportedly planning to convert 24 offices in the greater Montreal area from unilingual French to bilingual.

That would mean nearly one-in-three post offices — or 31 per cent — will be bilingual in the Montreal region, compared to one in five — or 21 per cent — currently.
