Black Montreal community leader Dr. Clarence Bayne has died

Longtime Montreal leader in the Black community, Dr. Clarence Bayne, has died. He was 91 years old.

The Black Theatre Workshop (BTW) made the announcement on its Facebook page Tuesday.

Dr. Bayne was a founding member of the BTW.

“We are deeply saddened to hear about the passing of our dear friend and colleague, Dr. Clarence Bayne. As Co-Founder of the Black Theatre Workshop, Executive Director, and active member of the Board of Directors until his passing, he has made countless contributions to the BTW’s future and legacy,” reads the BTW’s page. “Balancing his involvement with numerous other companies and associations, he has consistently not only opened doors and uplifted others, but through his life of advocacy, ensure that those doors remained open.”

He was also the past president and board member of the Black Community Resource Centre.

“Dr. Bayne was a pillar of strength and a guiding light for our community. His lifelong dedication to championing the rights and voices of the English-speaking Black community in Quebec has left a profound impact on all of us,” wrote the Black Community Resource Centre on its Facebook page. “We will keep you updated as arrangements are made to honor Dr. Bayne’s memory.”

The Montreal leader taught at Concordia University and advocated for Montreal to recognize Black History Montreal in the 1990’s.
