Reckless driving on the rise in Montreal: report

By News Staff

There has been an increase in the number of road deaths, serious injuries, and dangerous driving according to a new report from the Montreal police (SPVM) – from January to July of this year.

Data obtained by Radio-Canada shows that nine pedestrians have died, and 74 people were seriously injured in 2024, compared to eight deaths and 52 serious injuries in 2023.

The number of dangerous driving offences nearly doubled from 166 (January to June 2023) to 312 (January to June 2024).

Piétons Québec believes that the rising numbers can be attributed to numerous road construction sites and more motorists, which can cause impatience among drivers.

The City of Montreal wants road users to be more vigilant and reiterate that they plan to widen sidewalks and pedestrian crossings at key intersections and create new measures to reduce traffic in residential areas.
