The 32nd edition of the Montreal marathon takes place this weekend and it’s going to affect travel for motorists.
Last year, 20,000 participants were at the start line for one or more of the Beneva Montreal Marathon races. And some 25,000 are expected this time around.
Saturday’s marathon will feature three different races ranging from one kilometre to 10 kilometres. On Sunday, the full and half marathon will start on Île Ste-Hélène and end at Park Maisonneuve
“The runners will start from Jean-Drapeau Park and after that they will go to Old Montreal,” said City of Montreal spokesperson Guillaume Rivest. “They will take Berri Street and head towards La Fontaine Park. Afterwards, they’re going to take Saint-Laurent going northward and they will come back down south on Saint-Laurent Street.”
The shortest race starts the Botanical Gardens and the other two start on Sherbrooke Street – all ending at Maisonneuve Park.
On Sunday, the full and half marathon will start on Île Ste-Hélène and near the Olympic Stadium.
“So the area here at Maisonneuve Park is to be avoided between 6:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. And on a Sunday, we anticipate a high volume of cars on the east-west crossing end. So be aware.”
All vehicles parked on the running route will be towed.
Beneva Montreal Marathon Executive Producer Alex Ratthé said the runners routes will be available on multiple road map apps.
“Please note that the course of the Montreal Marathon will be available on Waze and Google Map. So, you will be able to prepare your itinerary, your route and function with Waze and Google Map.”
There will be multiple closures each day – ranging from 7 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Saturday and 6:45 a.m. to 2:15 p.m. on Sunday.
