Ensemble Montréal candidates prepare for leadership race

By News Staff

Ensemble Montréal’s leadership race will kick off on Oct.15 and run for four months.

The new leader of the Official Opposition Party will be elected on Feb. 16, 2025, at a Leadership Convention, following a week-long voting period.

All Montreal party members will be eligible to vote.

“We are entering a crucial and particularly exciting phase for Ensemble Montréal and for the citizens of our metropolis,” said Ensemble Montréal President Carmine Pollice. “We invite all those who want a fairer, more prosperous, and more equitable Montreal to join our movement. Together, we’ll elect a visionary leader ready to tackle the complex challenges our city faces. It’s through public engagement that we will put the priorities of Montrealers back at the heart of municipal action.”

Candidates have until Dec. 15 to submit their candidacy. To be eligible, they need to collect 200 member signatures, including at least 100 from new members and they must be recruited from at least 10 Montreal boroughs.

Those running will also need to raise $15,000 in donations or party memberships.

Ensemble Montréal is currently established in 11 boroughs and is represented by 37 elected officials.

The Official Opposition party said this race is an opportunity to bring fresh energy and offer hope to the many citizens who want change.

“This leadership race marks a turning point for Ensemble Montréal. It will allow our members to choose a leader capable of translating their aspirations into concrete actions,” said Patrick Thauvette, executive director of Ensemble Montréal. “It’s a unique opportunity to renew our commitment to citizens and propose innovative solutions to address the challenges Montreal faces.”

Some of the ongoing issues that candidates will face include the housing crisis, homelessness, and public safety.
