Port of Montreal dockworkers 72-hour partial strike will begin Monday morning

By The Canadian Press

The 72-hour partial strike by dockworkers is expected to take place Monday morning. The Maritime Employers Association (MEA) announced that it had not reached an agreement with the union representing longshoremen at the Port of Montreal.

“The MEA has tried by all available means to avoid the strike scheduled for tomorrow at the Viau and Maisonneuve terminals of the Termont company at the Port of Montreal,” the association stated in a press release published Sunday evening.

“Whether through mediation, supported by the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service, or before the Canada Industrial Relations Board in an emergency hearing this afternoon, our efforts have not borne fruit.”

A total of 320 longshoremen will walk out. Two of the Termont company’s terminals, those of Viau and Maisonneuve, will be affected by the strike.

The Canadian Union of Public Employees, affiliated with the FTQ, represents some 1,200 longshoremen at the Port of Montreal.

The Montreal Port Authority gave an idea of the extent of the potential repercussions on Friday: “this action will have the effect of suspending operations at the Viau and Maisonneuve terminals, which represent 41 per cent of containers transiting the Port of Montreal.”
