2.7 magnitude earthquake strikes north of Montreal

Some residents in Saint-Jérôme and Rawdon may have been woken up by a 2.7 magnitude earthquake Wednesday morning.

Earthquakes Canada said the quake would have been “lightly felt” by residents of those municipalities.

The earthquake struck at 7:40 a.m. northwest of Rawdon, near Chertsey, at a depth of 13 kilometres.

Several social media users in the area appeared to suggest the earthquake was more than “lightly felt.”

“I have never felt such a big earthquake as this morning. My cats are terrified,” wrote X user @marie_qqchose.

“It was strange. We would have said it was more of an explosion than an earthquake,” added @ValetDeDeniers on X.
