Classes and activities were cancelled at CEGEP de Valleyfield in Montérégie on Friday morning after a police intervention.
The college published a short message on social media saying that campus was closed “due to a police intervention.”
Quebec provincial police (SQ) responded to a call to 911 at around 6:15 a.m. about an incident on Champlain Street.
According to police, a school employee in their 40s was stabbed in the upper body by a man in his 30s.
“A perimeter was set up and the premises were quickly secured so that no one could enter or leave the establishment without knowing the individual’s intentions,” the SQ stated in a press release.
Officers were able to locate and arrest the suspect, who was taken to hospital for treatment.
“He will be interviewed when his condition permits,” said the SQ.
The victim was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
“The library will be closed for the time being. The study centers remain open, and classes and activities continue,” wrote CEGEP de Valleyfield on Facebook.
Also, some online courses will continue throughout the day and a special emergency line has also been set up for employees.
Shortly after, other photos and videos posted on social media showed smoke coming from the college building, but authorities have not confirmed if the two events are connected.
The investigation is currently ongoing.
