Port of Montreal: Dockworkers will refuse to work overtime

By The Canadian Press, Lia Lévesque

The Port of Montreal dockworkers’ union will refuse overtime as of Thursday 7 a.m., for an indefinite period. It’s another pressure tactic they are using amid negotiations for a contract. This comes days after a strike last week.

The Canadian Union of Public Employees, affiliated with the FTQ, represents more than 1,200 dockworkers at the Port of Montreal.

Negotiations for the renewal of the collective agreement have been going on for a year; the collective agreement expired on Dec. 31, 2023.

A mediation session between the parties took place last Friday in the presence of two federal mediators, after the dockworkers resumed their activities.

Some 320 of them went on a three-day partial strike last Monday, Sept. 30 to Thursday, Oct. 3, affecting the Viau and Maisonneuve terminals of the Termont company.

Schedule management and work-family balance are among the main points in dispute.
