At least two buildings have reportedly been affected by a water main break in Montreal’s Plateau early Monday morning.

“Workers are working on the valve closure in the matter of minutes,” said City’s spokesperson, Philippe Sabourin.

The water leak was detected around 5 a.m. near Parc La Fontaine — it had forced the closure of Rachel Street between Papineau and Marquette. The street had reopened around 8:30 a.m.

“No concern regarding rush hour this morning and this afternoon,” said Sabourin. “People just need to avoid Papineau, Rachel.”

The City’s mobility squad and the SPVM are on the scene, he explained, to direct traffic.

Public works crews are also on site, working on closing the valve — a valve that Sabourin speculates to be a water pipe of 16 inches.

“A minimum of one day is needed to complete the repair,” he explained. “There’s no more than two or three buildings that has been flooded.”

“The situation will be resolved once the valve being closed,” he added.

Montreal police said that no evacuations needed to be made.

Adding that the street closure will be in place for an undetermined time.

At the moment, the cause of the break is unknown.
