Nalie’s Legacy Walk honours influential Montrealer who lost battle with breast cancer in 2022

Loved ones paid tribute to influential Montreal cancer advocate Nalie Agustin with a walk in her honour Saturday morning.

Family, friends and members of the community joined together for “Nalie’s Legacy Walk” – both a tribute to the Montrealer who passed away in 2022 and a breast cancer fundraising event for the Nalie Foundation.

“To see the presence of our friends and supporters of Nalie, this encourages us and inspires us to continue the work that she began many years ago from the time she was diagnosed in 2013,” her father Jess Agustin said.

“Nalie’s spirit is very much alive and that her legacy continues.”

Participants walked along the Lachine Canal in St-Henri, passing by the very spots where Agustin loved to stroll and meditate. There were readings and moments of reflection along the two-kilometre walk.

“The idea of this walk came from, well, Nalie’s habits herself when she was undergoing her cancer treatment, walking was a big part of her healing journey,” her brother Justin said.

Agustin’s years-long battle with cancer touched the hearts of many, whether they knew her personally or followed her journey on social media.

“She inspired a community of thrivers in the cancer community but also people that don’t have cancer because she believed everyone has their cancers and everyone can see the light in their darkest moments,” her brother Albert said.

The 33-year-old cancer advocate, public speaker, social media influencer and best-selling author passed away March 22, 2022.

Agustin was 23 when her battle with breast cancer began in 2013, and she started sharing her journey with members of the public. In 2017, when she had a recurrence, she continued to share, opening up about her health challenges on YouTube and inspiring many others.

“She posted a lot of amazing inspirational content about her journey which helped millions of people who are going through the same thing as Nalie,” Justin said.

The family is using the walk as an opportunity to raise awareness about breast cancer and metastatic breast cancer.
