Quebecers being targeted by fraudsters who threaten to expose access to explicit sites, police warn

The Sûreté du Québec and Laval police are warning about a new email fraud that threatens to expose alleged visits to explicit websites to extort money.
The scam involves victims receiving messages containing personal information, such as names, phone numbers, and addresses, along with claims that a compromising video will be shared unless a payment is made.
Police say fraudsters often include images of the victim’s home, found online or through social media.
The scammers then tell victims they will send a compromising video of them to their contacts.
“As with most frauds, individuals exploit fear and a sense of urgency to achieve their ends,” Laval police said in a news release.
Laval police say they’ve received multiple reports of this type of fraud attempt since last month, and are urging residents to stay vigilant.
Both Laval police and the SQ are recommending Quebecers protect their personal information; resist pressure from scammers; stop all communication with possible fraudsters; and report suspicious activity to police at 911 or the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
Anyone with information about the scheme is encouraged to contact the Police Info Line at 450 622-INFO (4636) or call 911.
