BEI investigate man shot dead by Gatineau police

By The Canadian Press

The Bureau des enquêtes indépendantes (BEI) are investigating after a man, who allegedly stabbed a police officer, was shot dead on Wednesday in Gatineau.

According to Gatineau police (SPVG), they received a 911 call before midnight on Saint-Rédempteur Street, near the Hull sector.

Police say that an officer was stabbed by the suspect with a bladed weapon and suffered serious injuries. The officer was taken to hospital and his life is not in danger.

“The police officers deployed to the scene had to intervene quickly and rescue their colleague. The man was shot and died from his injuries,” said the SPVG in a press release.

“Since an independent investigation has been launched, the SPVG will not be able to communicate any information regarding the progress of the intervention, as well as the nature of the initial call,” said the police.

Saint-Rédempteur Street was closed to traffic between Sacré-Cœur Blvd. and Mangin Street and a command post was deployed.

The SPVG also set up a crisis unit to manage police operations and provide psychological support to officers and civilian employees who were affected by this event.

Gatineau police say they will “provide all necessary support” to the officer who was stabbed and to their loved ones.

The BEI investigates any time a person, other than a police officer on duty, dies, suffers serious injury or is injured by a firearm used by a police officer during an intervention.
