The City of Montreal estimates that on average, half of garbage bag contents are filled with organic waste.

The squad has met with 13,000 Montrelers to date, distrubuting starter kits in front of the Mont-Royal metro. They believe it’s simply about getting into the habit.

Composting can start with just a few small steps – beginning with items like fruits and coffee grinds.

Other tips include finding a shady outdoor spot to keep your brown compost bin to reduce smells. A good repellent for racoons and squirrels, the squad recommends, is adding tiger balm to the lid.

Montreal opened its first organic waste treatment plant in Saint-Laurent earlier this week. The facility will treat 50,000 tonnes of organic waste and part of the compost will be distributed to citizens for free.
