Montrealers, tourists share their opinions about the U.S. election

By News Staff

The U.S. election is underway, with Democratic candidate Kamala Harris and Republican nominee Donald Trump fighting for the White House.

The 2024 election has everyone watching in anticipation. Here’s what Montrealers and those visiting the city told CityNews about who they think will win.

Absolom, visitor from New Brunswick

What are your thoughts about the U.S. election?

“Well, they’re at a crossroad as a nation and whatever they choose, whoever they choose, whatever path they choose to take, as the saying goes, ‘if you make a bed, you better sleep on it.’ So, both the candidates have something to offer but it comes to personal choices, I would say.”

Depending on who wins, how will it affect Canadians across the border?

“Not so much, not so much because they are independent countries and the relations are cozy, they are good, so not so much.”

Who would you vote for?

“I would probably go for Kamala, because of what the other side offers. I would say the former president is a little bit off, a little bit, because of his rhetoric and because of his record. If I were an American, Kamala would be my preferred choice.”

Danielle, Montreal resident

What are your thoughts about the U.S. election?

“I’m nervous because things happen in the States that shocked me like last time, that Trump won. I said, he’ll never. And I can’t say the same thing this time. So, I’m really scared.”

Depending on who wins, how will it affect Canadians across the border?

“Tariffs, one. Mostly tariffs, I think it will also encourage the right wings here, including Poilievre, in being more vocal and thinking that it’s OK to be so extreme in one’s views. And it’s not. So that’s what makes me very, very nervous.”

Who would you vote for?

Oh, Kamala. Oh, hands down Kamala.”

Nicholas, visitor from Calgary

What are your thoughts about the U.S. election?

“I would love for Trump to win because I like when he says funny things and he says some smart things that you can’t think of yourself because they’re hilarious. He’s probably going to win, to tell you the truth.”

Depending on who wins, how will it affect Canadians across the border?

“We’ll follow what he does pretty much, right? The same thing with the Chinese tariffs against China with electric vehicles. Why are we following him?”

Jade and Lili, visitors from Martinique and France

What are your thoughts about the U.S. election?

“I’m anxious because I’m thinking about applying for grad school in the States. And we were saying, I don’t know if I’m still doing it, if Trump becomes president.”

“Honestly, I feel the same. I’m not as impacted because I’m not thinking about applying anywhere in the U.S., within the next couple of years. But it’s true that if Trump is elected, I will be a bit anxious and stressed. I know a lot of people that are going to come to Canada if Trump is elected because they’re just scared to stay in the U.S.”

Depending on who wins, how will it affect Canadians across the border?

“I don’t know. I think some people are worried that the U.S. might come to Canada instead, but on the other side, I’ve always been told like that Canada kind of follows U.S. politics sometimes and trends.”

“I think that, honestly, I didn’t learn a lot about the politics and candidates in Canada. But I think that maybe if Trump wins, the U.S. would be maybe closer to international commerce and things like that. But I don’t know what the stance of the similarities on Canada and the relations is between the two of them. I don’t think Canada will close the borders.”

Who would you vote for?

“Kamala! For women… Not even as a woman. As a human being. As an international human being. Just people having common sense. We like democracy.”

Simon, Montreal resident

What are your thoughts about the U.S. election?

“It’s going to be a pleasant day. It’s going to be a new step. It’s the biggest election in a long time. I think we’re going to be happy with the results.”

Depending on who wins, how will it affect Canadians across the border?

“Well, I think it’s going to affect us positively if Kamala wins and not negatively if Trump wins because of the aggressivity that he has in the last trade agreements, free trade agreements. So, I would expect he would want to have the same kind of aggressivity level.”

Who would you vote for?

“I would vote for Kamala.”
