St-Michel metro station reopens after nearly 6 weeks

By News Staff

The St-Michel metro station reopened on Monday at 10 a.m., announced the Société de transport de Montréal (STM).

The station was closed for safety reasons on Oct. 3, with the STM saying there was significant damage to a main beam above the tracks. The Fabre and d’Iberville metro stations — also on the blue line — were closed but reopened on Oct. 9.

“Work has been carried out to secure two beams of the main staircase above the tracks, which after closer inspection were more deteriorated than expected,” STM explained in a press release Monday. “The work involved erecting posts to support the beam base, bolting steel reinforcement plates to the beams, and adding reinforcing steel and an extra layer of concrete to the beam jacketing to strengthen the beams.”

The STM adds that they are “now convinced that the site is safe and secure for customers and that the station can be reopened.”

Shuttle buses that were running while the station was closed came to an end around 11 a.m.

Final structural work on the beams will be completed as part of the station renovation work, which began in March 2024 and will now continue as normal.

The station’s main entrance building will remain closed until spring 2025.
