The City of Montreal provided an update about the development on Sainte-Catherine Street West and a portion that has been closed from Stanley to Mansfield is reopening to pedestrians Friday – and then to motorists on Monday.
The popular downtown strip has been under construction since 2023 and the area between Stanley and Mansfield has been completely closed.
This major project had a budget for $70 million and is set to be complete in 2025.
“So now that all the infrastructure, the underground infrastructure has been changed, has been fixed, for 2025, we will work on the urban design,” said City of Montreal spokesperson Philippe Sabourin.
The first phase of the project began in 2018, between Mansfield and Bleury, with Phillips Square and Union undergoing work.
The city plans to renovate Saint-Catherine West all the way to Atwater.
Workers replaced sewer lines and pipes, along with underground infrastructure that was heavily outdated.
“We already fixed all the aging infrastructures. So, the infrastructure is new. In 2025, the goal is to complete the urban design on Sainte-Catherine. You can see already the new urban design on Sainte-Catherine between Mansfield and Metcalfe . It’s almost completed. 95 per cent of the job has been done on that stretch of the street. For the other stretch, meaning between Metcalfe and Peel, we will need to complete the pavement and bring plant some flowers.”
The city also plans on widening sidewalks and adding more greenery.
Sabourin noted that Christmas festivities are coming up in the city, and that merchants won’t find any fences or construction on Sainte-Catherine Street.
“There is no more construction associated to the underground infrastructure. So, for the next year we will complete the pavement work between Metcalfe and Peel,” he said.
The city is offering $5,000 for affected business owners – on top of the $40,000 aide program to companies who can prove they lost money during the construction.
“We will come back only in April to complete the construction project for 2025,” concluded Sabourin.
