Quebec government engineers strike near La Fontaine Tunnel bridge

By News Staff

Engineers employed by the Government of Quebec, who have been on general strike since last Thursday, came together on Monday morning to show what they say is their dismay at the attitude of the Legault government negotiators at the bargaining table.

Members of the Association professionnelle des ingénieurs du gouvernement du Québec (APIGQ) walked near the La Fontaine Tunnel Bridge.

BACKGROUND: Quebec government engineers launch unlimited strike

They picked that spot in particular, they said, as it symbolizes what they call “the Quebec government’s complete failure in the sound management of its public infrastructures, and its stubbornness in repeating the mistakes of the past.”

The parties have failed to reach an agreement on the renewal of the engineers’ collective agreement.

There are 2,000 engineers, members of APIGQ, who work in the Ministry of Transport, Environment, Cybersecurity, Municipal Affairs, Agriculture, Energy and Natural Resources.

Some 490 of them could potentially be assigned to essential services, like infrastructure interventions.

The dispute concerns salaries, the use of sub-contracting to the private sector, the requested flexibility and the professional autonomy of engineers.
