The Société d’habitation du Québec (SHQ) launched a campaign on Tuesday to inform tenants and landlords about their housing rights and obligations.
According to a press release, the three messages will revolve around the right of tenants to return to their homes after major renovations, the moratorium that’s in effect until 2027 on evictions for the purpose of enlarging, subdividing or changing the use of a dwelling, and the enhanced protection of tenants aged 65 or over against repossessions and evictions.
After Bill 65 and Bill 31 were adopted this year, several changes were made to maintain the balance between tenants and landlords.
The SHQ’s mission is to meet the housing needs of Quebec citizens by offering affordable or low-rent housing and access to assistance programs.
“In the context of a housing crisis, tenants and landlords must absolutely better understand their rights, recourses, obligations and responsibilities,” said Housing Minister Élaine Duranceau. “A well-informed person can make informed decisions and assert their rights. Housing issues are complex and have a direct impact on the quality of life of many Quebecers. Get informed to better understand and thus better understand each other.”
The SHQ is working alongside with the Ministère des Affaires municipales and the l’Habitation and the Tribunal administratif du logement.
The multimedia campaign will run until mid-December.
In the upcoming weeks, messages will be aired on television, radio, online and on social media, focusing on three key rules.
