Pro-Palestinian graffiti at Université de Montréal ahead of student protests

Montreal police are investigating graffiti and vandalism at the Université de Montréal, on a day where students are planning a pro-Palestinian rally in the city.

A green “Palestine Libre” was graffitied on the floor outside the university’s Jean-Brillant Pavillion entrance between midnight and 1 a.m., SPVM spokesperson Véronique Dubuc told CityNews. More paint was splashed across the university stairs and the HEC building windows.

Dubuc said police are looking into video recordings to shed light on the investigation.

Thousands of students are planning to strike across Quebec and around the world Thursday — and more again on Friday — in what’s being described as a historic pro-Palestinian rally.

Multiple student associations — including those at Dawson College and Collège Montmorency — have voiced their support in the wide protest demanding an end to the Israel-Hamas war. Dawson has announced classes would be cancelled Thursday as a result.

Organizers say Thursday’s strike is beginning at 1 p.m. on De Maisonneuve, coinciding with the International Day of Action against genocide and student repression. The second strike is held by Coalition de Résistance pour l’Unité Étudiante Syndicale (CRUES) on Friday starting at Place Émilie-Gamelin in downtown Montreal.

Organizers add the rallies are to stand in solidarity with students allegedly facing repression across CEGEP and university campuses in the province.
