Port of Montreal: Parties enter special mediation

By The Canadian Press

The union representing 1,200 longshoremen and the Maritime Employers Association have decided to enter special mediation as a final attempt tor reach a settlement at the Port of Montreal.

Federal Labour Minister Steven MacKinnon called for binding arbitration on Nov. 12 to end the labour dispute, which consisted of a lockout, a partial strike, and a refusal to work overtime.

Since then, work has resumed at the Port of Montreal, the largest port in Eastern Canada.

The parties will engage in mediation for 90 days, and they will refrain from making any public statements.

They also agreed to appoint Gilles Charland, a man with several decades of experience, as the mediator.
