A cause of death has not been determined for two boys killed alongside their mother at their home on Montreal’s South Shore in September 2022, the murder trial for the accused has heard.

The pathologist who performed the autopsies on all three bodies – mother Synthia Bussières and her two sons, aged two and five – told the Longueuil courthouse Monday there were no signs of violence on the boys’ bodies.

Dr. Yann Dazé, the Crown’s final witness, also said he believed the boys – Zac and Eliam – died before a fire was set to the Brossard apartment, and there were no burn marks on their bodies, according to the Montreal Gazette and La Presse.

Mohamad Al Ballouz, who now identifies as a woman, is accused of murdering her wife and two sons on the night of Sept. 24, 2022.

The Crown is alleging Al Ballouz fatally stabbed Bussières – who allegedly showed multiple signs of defence wounds – before killing the boys, setting fire to the apartment and attempting to take her own life.

Al Ballouz, who is acting as her own lawyer in the jury trial, suggested that Bussières was the one who killed her two children before trying to murder the accused.
