Unionized CN workers vote in favour of strike action

By News Staff

Union members working at Canadian National Railway (CN) have voted overwhelmingly in favour of strike action.

On Monday they announced that they are prepared to strike if an agreement cannot be reached by Jan. 1, 2025.

“This overwhelming majority in favour of a strike mandate sends a clear message to CN that our members are united and ready to take action to get the fair treatment and respect they deserve,” said Unifor National President Lana Payne.

“Our members are fed up with concessions that undermine their rights and purchasing power, and they are committed to a contract that reflects their value and the critical role they play in CN’s prosperity.”

CN workers are advocating for job security, fair compensation and better working conditions.

“CN has benefited tremendously from the dedication and hard work of our members,” said Daniel Cloutier, Unifor Quebec Director. Yet, CN continues to ignore their most basic needs. Our members are sending a clear and united message to the employer: it’s time to make meaningful progress at the bargaining table.”

Negotiations with CN will continue in Montreal up to Dec. 8.

Council 4000 represents more than 3,300 Unifor members who work in customer service, clerical work, and mechanical operations.

Local 100 represents 2,100 Unifor members who work as mechanics and heavy equipment operators, among other things.

Both bargaining committees say they remain committed to demanding a fair collective agreement.
