Quebec Liberals want blood alcohol limit changed to 0.05

By The Canadian Press

The Quebec Liberal Party (PLQ) presented recommendations from three coroners to lower the blood alcohol limit from 0.08 to 0.05 on Thursday.

According to PLQ transport spokesperson Monsef Derraji, the CAQ government no longer has any excuse to resist this change in the Highway Safety Code.

Currently, most provinces impose administrative penalties on drivers with a blood alcohol level between 0.05 and 0.08, except Quebec.

“It’s stubbornness,” said Derraji. “Clearly, today, if there is someone who is blocking the change in the recommendation from the three coroners, there is only one name, and it is Geneviève Guilbault.”

Derraji said he can’t explain why the government has always refused the requested amendment, despite an opinion from the Société d’assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ), the coroner’s reports and amendments tabled by the PLQ during the study of a bill on road safety.

“If there are lobbies, I want to see them. Let them come out. Let them speak. I invite them to speak to the cameras. Let them call you. Let them say that I must not continue this fight. Let them speak to the coroners.”

The Liberal MNA added that even CAQ elected officials he spoke to are in favour of the changes.
