By The Canadian Press

A 17-year-old man was arrested in Montreal after trying to flee from police officers early Monday in the Saint-Michel neighbourhood. An officer was injured during the intervention and had to be taken to hospital.

According to Montreal police (SPVM), the cascade of events began around 3:50 a.m. at the intersection of Crémazie Boulevard and D’Iberville Street.

At that time, police officers attempted to intercept a vehicle after observing dangerous driving. However, the driver of the vehicle allegedly refused to stop and fled.

“During this escape, a police officer suffered non-life-threatening injuries. The officer was nevertheless taken to hospital,” explained an SPVM spokesperson, Véronique Dubuc.

The driver then finally stopped on Langelier Boulevard, near Lavoisier Boulevard, in the Saint-Leonard borough, but fled on foot.

The 17-year-old was arrested around 4:10 a.m. for assaulting an officer with a weapon and dangerous driving. The SPVM is also trying to determine whether the vehicle he was in was stolen.

The SPVM has set up a security perimeter to continue its investigation.
