OQLF updates list of bilingual health centres in Quebec

The MUHC, St-Mary’s Hospital and Lakeshore General Hospital are among the 28 health centres in Montreal – and among the 69 in Quebec – that have bilingual status.
That’s according to an updated list by the Office québécois de la langue française (OQLF).
The Quebec government says under the Charter of the French Language, “health and social services institutions are recognized when they provide their services to persons whose majority is a language other than French.”
“The Act respecting health services and social services recognizes the right of English-speaking persons to receive health and social services in English,” the Quebec government website reads.
“Some institutions and facilities are designated to offer all of their services in English while others are designated to offer certain services in English.
“So-called ‘designated’ establishments and facilities are required to make all their health and social services accessible in English to English-speaking people.”
The updated list offers some clarity of what certain critics have called confusing directives from the province. In September, the Legault government dropped a requirement that “historic anglophones” produce an eligibility certificate in order to receive services in English.
