Hockey could become Quebec’s official national sport

By Thomas Laberge, The Canadian Press

The CAQ government is considering legislation to make hockey the province’s official national sport.

Asked if this was a priority for Quebecers, Culture and Communications Minister Mathieu Lacombe said, “I think Quebecers love hockey.”

The project is still at an initial stage. “We’re working on it right now. There’s an intention, but obviously, there are still a lot of steps to be taken, so we’re going to continue working on it,” the Minister told a press scrum at the National Assembly on Wednesday.

There are many hockey fans in the government, starting with Premier François Legault.

Finance Minister Eric Girard found himself at the heart of a controversy after announcing that his government would inject public funds for the Los Angeles Kings’ visit to Quebec City. “Le Soleil” reported on Monday that the visit had cost $5.6 million.
