Two-week period amid Holidays deadly on Quebec roads: SAAQ

By News Staff

As the holiday break approaches, the Société de l’assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ) is calling on all road users to remain vigilant and to respect the Highway Safety Code.

They want all drivers to adapt to various road conditions that they may face during their holiday travels.

According to the SAAQ, during the holiday season, there’s an average of 733 road accidents in Quebec – including nine deaths, 25 serious injuries and 699 minor injuries.

“In addition, it should be noted that the main cause of 81 per cent of road deaths is a human factor (the state or behaviour of a road user) and that these deaths could therefore be avoided,” reads a press release. “Awareness among drivers can really change the outcome of an evening, allowing it to be magical rather than tragic.”

The SAAQ has provided a few safety tips for drivers:

-Clear the snow off your vehicle properly and adapt your driving to road conditions.

-Be patient and courteous on the road.

-Plan your drive home before you start celebrating by appointing a designated driver, accept offers to sleep at someone’s house, use public transport (taxi, bus, etc.) and keep your attention on the road, especially at night.
