Quebec extends reduced cost of driver’s licence for another year

By The Canadian Press

Quebec is extending the reduced cost of a driver’s licence for a fourth year, announced Transport Minister Geneviève Guilbault on Friday.

As a result, a driver with a Class 5 driver’s license who has no demerit points will only have to pay $26.25, rather than $118.41, to renew his or her license in 2025.

“This rebate is possible thanks to the reduction in compensation amounts to be paid to road accident victims since 2020, and to an increase in the yield of the Fonds d’assurance automobile du Québec and the sums available in it,” reads a press release issued by the Société de l’assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ).

Due to the month-long strike by Canada Post workers, Guilbault also announced that the validity period for driver’s licences and registrations expiring between Friday and Feb. 28 will be extended.

Drivers with a birth date between Dec. 20 and Feb. 28 will have until March 31 to make their payment. Owners of vehicles whose surname begins with the letter A, B, C or W will have until the same date to pay their registration fees.

“Once again, safety on our roads is improving, and the number of claims is falling. It’s only natural that this positive result should benefit our drivers,” said Guilbault, in a press release.

The payment vacation is intended for holders of a regular, probationary or restricted class 5 and 6 driver’s licence. The price of the driver’s license had also been reduced in 2022, 2023 and 2024.
