Quebec band ‘Country City Boyz’ bring unique sound to local music scene

"Merge a little bit of country with pop rap," said FL4GA, a member of the band Country City Boyz, speaking about their sound. Adriana Gentile reports.

Meet Frank Dallas and FL4GA, two Quebecers that make up the band Country City Boyz, bringing a mix of hip-hop, rap, and country to the music scene.

“We kind of merged rap and country in a way that nobody really did before. There are some Americans who do rap country, but it’s not exactly like what we do,” said Dallas.

Before the band formed, they each had their own solo careers. They connected when they collaborated on a song together.

Dallas had more of a solo career in rap, while FL4GA got into country in 2018.

“It was in 2019 that we connected together for one song that I was working on for my new EP. I met FL4GA because I needed somebody to sing a country vibe on the hook. The beat was a little bit country, and I was like, I don’t know, I need someone that can sing country a bit. My producer put me in contact with him. Then we did one song on the EP, and after that, we were like, we need to do more,” Dallas expressed.

“It’s the chemistry that came together naturally,” added FL4GA.

At the start of the pandemic, they lost touch. But last year, they decided to put their solo projects aside and come together once more. The band now showcasing their unique sound.

“We were trying to mix, to merge a little bit of country with the pop rap, if I can say so. Country and city, two good ingredients to make good music. And I’ve been inspired by Morgan Wallen, Luke Combs, Warren Zeiders, and stuff like that. So it’s pretty much the new pop country that we’re trying to bring here in Quebec because sometimes it’s hard for country artists,” said FL4GA.

They’ve released several singles, including “1000 Miles” and “Country Boy.” Their newest is called “Ce Soir.”

“There’s a good concept about it, and a nice story,” expressed FL4GA.

“‘Ce Soir’ for now, it’s our biggest hit, but it’s because we’ve got so many more in our back pocket coming up for you guys. So we’re just waiting to compile all this up, and we’re having an album coming up soon. Maybe next summer,” he added.

For Dallas, being in a band has been a dream come true.

“For me, it was always kind of a dream to actually have a band, and on stage, we’re going to have musicians. We’re going to have a guitarist, we’re going to have a drummer, we’re going to be like a full band. It’s always been a dream for me to actually have a band. I was into hip-hop, but I was always having the dream to do a show with musicians, a real show, not just me on the stage,” said Dallas.

Country City Boyz are looking ahead and are excited for what’s to come, with a couple of shows already booked for 2025 and an EP set for June. They’re starting off the new year right with a music video for “Ce Soir.”

“Friday, January 10, the video clip for ‘Ce Soir’ is going to be out,” said Dallas.
