Union: Layoffs at Amazon warehouse in Laval, company says claim is false

By CityNews & The Canadian Press

The union representing workers at the Amazon warehouse in Laval says at least 30 of them have just learned they will lose their jobs.

In a press release on Tuesday, the CSN says it strongly condemns the dismissals, “the second wave of this kind at the DXT4 warehouse since the unionization of its 300 employees last May.”

Although it is common in the retail world for layoffs to occur after the busy holiday season, CSN president Caroline Senneville says she sees this as a retaliatory measure due to the unionization of these workers.

Amazon, however, denies any bad intentions and accuses the CSN of spreading false information.

Barbara Agrait, an Amazon spokesperson, says: “This claim is false and the CSN is being intentionally misleading. These individuals were hired as seasonal employees and their contracts included transparent end dates. We appreciate all the work they did to support delivering for our customers this holiday season.”

Senneville says the union is not informed of the exact number of layoffs or the criteria for determining who is laid off. She points out, for example, that it is not necessarily the most recently hired who are laid off, but sometimes those who were hired six months ago.

The president of the Amazon Laval-CSN Workers’ Union, Félix Trudeau, says this represents the reason employees decided to unionize.

The union, accredited last May by the Administrative Labour Tribunal, is still busy negotiating its first collective agreement. Other negotiation meetings are planned for January.
