Hundreds of motorists were arrested for impaired driving during road checks that were carried out across Quebec from the end of November to the start of the new year.
More than 800 were arrested for driving while being under the influence of alcohol, or impaired by drugs or both.
The Sûreté du Québec (SQ), in collaboration with the road inspectors of the Société de l’assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ), unveiled these results Monday from the provincial operation Alcool-Drogues that took place from Nov. 29, 2024 to Jan. 2, 2025.
These road checks allowed officers to intervene both in a coercive manner, and to raising awareness among drivers.
During this time, the SAAQ also launched a campaign called “There are plenty of good reasons to be a designated driver.”
The campaign was aimed “to raise awareness among drivers about the importance of not driving if they have been drinking, but also to highlight the important role of designated drivers,” the SQ wrote in a press release.
Adding that police operations aimed at preventing impaired driving will continue throughout the year.
